Okay I realize I complained nonstop through the en Okay I realize I complained nonstop through the entire month of August. It was too hot and too dry and while I obviously have some sort of reverse seasonal affective disorder, if I’m honest, it marked the end of a summer break that felt a little bit underwhelming. As a mom, I felt responsible for wasting a summer that we won’t ever get back. ⁣ ⁣ But looking back at the month, I don’t think my kids felt like it was wasted at all. It might have come in short of my own expectations, but not theirs. ⁣ ⁣ In reality, August was a month of amusement (albeit the hot, sweaty kind). Even in the mundane, even in the routine, even when summer is over, my kids know how to have fun. They see the wonders of the world. They don’t just witness them, they truly SEE them. The big, exciting moments are just as important as the tiny, seemingly insignificant occurrences, and they know how to celebrate it all. ⁣ ⁣ And they learned that from me. ⁣ Once upon a time there was a family who wanted ⁣ Once upon a time there was a family who wanted to take a quick trip to a beautiful resort that had something for everyone, provided equal parts fun and relaxation, and would keep us cool in the Texas heat. ⁣ ⁣ Actually, that’s not true. ⁣ ⁣ This story started a few years ago when we booked the closest hotel to the theme park. That’s it. ⁣ ⁣ Except when we got to the resort we fell in love. We were hooked by the lazy river shaded by live oaks, enchanted by the fireflies as we ate our body weight in s’mores, and utterly delighted by the squirrels eating right out of our hands. On our flight back from Hawaii 13 years ago, we sa On our flight back from Hawaii 13 years ago, we sat next to a man who comes here every single year. He said the only thing they ever do is lay by the pool all day long for a week straight. As we went on and on about our adventures, he kept saying he was jealous that we did more in one trip than he had ever done in decades of coming to Hawaii. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We think of that man often. Not that we’re knocking it. There’s a lot to be said for rest and relaxation, but we figure we can do that at home. We travel to make memories and to experience as much of this world as we can while we’re here. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Except today we resorted to resorting. We were the most basic of basic tourists. But we still didn’t lounge. The kids played in the sand, we snorkeled and paddle boarded, we soaked up a little too much sun, and then we lu’aued hard. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ *Disclaimer: These turtles were not disturbed by us in any way. They came to us, and we just froze. I don’t even think they were looking for food (we didn’t have any anyway), maybe they were just curious. We do what we can to save the turtles on the regular so nobody freak. When this trip was still in the dreaming phase we When this trip was still in the dreaming phase we decided the first Hawaiian island we would bring the kids to was Hawaii, the big island, to see the active volcanoes. We missed the Mauna Loa eruption by just a few weeks, but Kilauea didn’t disappoint. Dustin and I got to finish a hike across a crater that we started 13 years ago, and we watched fire fountains in a lava lake from multiple viewpoints and times of day. Groundhog Day.⁣ ⁣ If this is what I have to do for the rest of my life, I think I’m gonna be okay. ⁣ ⁣ Zero plans looked like a spam breakfast by the water, and a day at the beach next to a sacred temple (rebuilt) from King Kamehameha’s reign. We saw sea urchins, a rainbow of fish, mongoose, and a rainbow of birds. We made new friends, had a Mai tai in the shade, and enjoyed the first of many shave ices.⁣ ⁣ The highlight of the day was doing absolutely nothing while we enjoyed the warm breeze in our hair and the sand in our toes. ⁣ ⁣ I’m not coming back. Airports are one of my favorite places on the plan Airports are one of my favorite places on the planet. Any airport. It doesn’t matter. ⁣The people watching opportunities are endless and the variety of footwear alone provides some quality entertainment. ⁣ ⁣ I myself have strolled through the terminal in dressy flats, hiking boots and everything in between. But you know those shoes you sometimes come across in the department store and wonder, “Who would wear those?” The answer is airport people. Airport people totally rock some crazy shoes. And kudos to the women in heels. Any kind of heels. Kudos, and good luck. ⁣ ⁣ But it’s not just the shoes that get me. It’s people of all walks of life converging in one place, each to get somewhere else. Every shade of melanin, young and old, in groups, pairs and all alone, from every corner of the earth, we are each on a different mission. For every homebound business traveler, there is another on their way to make a new home. For every family headed to the beach, there is someone praying for the chance to kiss their loved one for the last time.⁣ ⁣ It’s easy to pass through, head down, ears covered, without ever noticing the life taking place in the seat next to you. But it’s fascinating to think about the thousands that walk these terminals every day, the many different people, with so many different journeys, and how they all start right here. ⁣ ⁣ Airports, and people, make the world feel so big, and yet so very, very small.
